On Friday, 10 October 2014, 38 participants from the Home for Mentally Ill Adults in Osijek successfully completed the theoretical part of CAE Validus’ training program on supported housing for persons with mental health disabilities.

The weeks following the introductory lectures of John Trainor, a Canadian mental health expert, focused on topics crucial to the transformation of the Home: the organization of the supported housing service, active support, crisis management, supported employment, person-centered approach, building and expanding circles of support, the importance of building and sustaining relationships, inclusion in the community, the importance of a healthy lifestyle, and communication. The topics were covered by CAE Validus’ trainers who are experts in the field of mental health and the provision of community services with extensive practical experience.

Friday, 10 October, was also World Mental Health Day, celebrated every year with the overall objective of raising awareness of mental health issues around the world and mobilizing efforts in support of mental health. This year the focus of the World Health Organization (WHO) was living with schizophrenia. Schizophrenia affects more than 21 million people worldwide and one in two people living with schizophrenia does not receive care for the condition. WHO also emphasises that the care of persons with schizophrenia can be provided at community level, with active family and community involvement.

We wish the Director and staff of the Home in Osijek a lot of success with the organization of new community services on their path of further transformation and deinstitutionalization.
